Weekend Work

Welcome back to our third week of Pre-K!  This week, we'll be learning about elephants (when we celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day this Thursday), dogs (in our celebration of National Dog Week), the first day of Fall (Friday), Turn Off TV Week (that should be well-received), and the letter Cc, as well as continuing our study of the calendar and weather, apples, Children's Good Manners Month, and counting.  We've got lots planned so check in with us daily!

If you recall from last week, we had a couple of things to complete over the weekend that we weren't able to finish.  You can expect this throughout the year, but that's the beauty of homeschooling -- flexibility!  Here are some photos from our weekend catch-up:

Working on her Creation Day 4 mobile ...
All done!
And hanging in her room!
Spreading lemon juice on one half of an apple in our 'Brown Apples' experiment ...
The right half has been painted with lemon juice, the left has not.  Now, we wait ...
Making the syrup for our apple chips recipe ... 1 1/2 cups sugar and 2 cups water, brought to a gentle boil, then removed from heat.
After we sliced our 4 apples thin and removed the seeds, we soaked them in our syrup for many hours (or overnight if you wish).
After that, take the slices out of the syrup and dry them on paper towels.  Then, preheat your oven to 200 degrees and spread your slices in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.  Bake for two hours or more, until crispy.  (The thicker your slices, the longer they will have to bake.)
They turned out so good!  Crunchy and sweet!
Maggie, working on her counting project with an egg carton and beans!
I numbered each egg cup, and she matched the beans to that number.  (I used the type of carton that folds out, so we'd have 24 cups instead of 12.)
All done!  Great job!

Over the weekend, we:
Bible Study:
1.  We completed the daily devotion out of our God and Me book -- 'Talking  on the Phone,' about how God always listens, then, we read 1 Samuel 16:1-13  together.
2.  We reread page 11 out of our The Beginner's Bible: Timeless Children Stories, about the fourth day of Creation.
3.  We reread pages 6 and 7 of The Story of Creation by Jane Ray.
4.  We made a mobile as seen at, to illustrate what God created on the fourth day:  the sun, the moon, and the stars.  (Rather than draw our own, though, we used a template from, and used glitter glue to add some sparkle.)
1.  We completed the 'Brown Apples' experiment (#193) out of our 501 Science Experiments book.
2.  We made apple chips, as directed in Hallmark Magazine, September/October 2008, page 34.
Math Concepts (Counting):
1.  We used an egg carton, marked with the numbers 1-24 in the bottom, to match the numbers with beans that we had counted.

See you again Tuesday afternoon!  :)
